Natalie Spooner Named PWHL MVP and Forward of the Year
Toronto's Natalie Spooner has been named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Forward of the Year in the Premier Hockey Federation (PWHL). Spooner showcased remarkable prowess this season, leading the league in scoring with an impressive 20 goals and seven assists.
Despite fierce competition from New York's Alex Carpenter and Montreal's Marie-Philip Poulin, it was Spooner's exceptional performance that distinguished her as the top player. What's even more remarkable about Spooner's achievement is her journey leading up to the season. She gave birth to her son at the end of 2022 and did not skate for six months prior to the season.
However, adversity did not end there for Spooner. She suffered a knee injury during the playoff semifinals but continued to prove her mettle, demonstrating an unyielding spirit and unwavering commitment to her team.
"I probably wouldn't have thought that it would have gone this way," Spooner admitted. "I think I was just super grateful to be playing again, to be back on the team. I was just really excited to get back out there with the girls, but I never thought that I'd be able to have, I guess, as big of an impact as I was able to have with the team."
Coach of the Year: Troy Ryan
Toronto's excellence on the ice this season is not only attributed to Spooner's magnificent performance but also to the strategic brilliance of their coach, Troy Ryan. Under his leadership, Toronto achieved a league-high of 47 points during the regular season and embarked on an impressive 11-game win streak.
Ryan's coaching philosophy and approach have fostered a winning culture within the team, securing him the well-deserved title of Coach of the Year.
Kristen Campbell: Goaltender of the Year
Toronto's dominance extends to their defense, where Kristen Campbell was named Goaltender of the Year after an outstanding season. Campbell recorded 16 wins and three shutouts, proving to be an impenetrable wall for opposing teams and a key figure in Toronto's success story.
Erin Ambrose: Defender of the Year
While Toronto celebrates multiple accolades, the honors extend beyond a single team. Montreal's Erin Ambrose claimed the title of Defender of the Year. Ambrose, who accumulated 18 points over 24 games, displayed remarkable consistency and defensive prowess, making her a cornerstone of Montreal's defense.
Grace Zumwinkle: Rookie of the Year
Minnesota's Grace Zumwinkle was recognized as Rookie of the Year, a testament to her noteworthy debut season. Zumwinkle recorded 19 points in 24 games, showcasing her potential and establishing herself as a rising star in the league.
Maureen Murphy: Hockey For All Award
Beyond on-ice performances, the PWHL also recognizes the contributions of players off the ice. Maureen Murphy earned the Hockey For All Award for her exceptional volunteer work, highlighting her commitment to making a positive impact in the community.
Selection Process
The winners of these prestigious awards were chosen by an 18-member selection committee, ensuring a comprehensive and fair evaluation of each player's contributions throughout the season.
