The Anaheim Ducks are embracing a bold new direction for their local game broadcasts, aiming to enhance fan access and engagement through a combination of direct-to-consumer streaming and traditional local broadcasts. This innovative move reflects a growing trend in sports media, where accessibility and fan engagement are paramount.
In a significant shift designed to benefit fans throughout the Ducks' expansive TV market, the team announced that 65 of their games next season will be broadcast on an over-the-air channel in Los Angeles. Additionally, all games will be streamed regionally on the Victory+ streaming service, available at no cost to viewers.
Expanding Access with Victory+
The Victory+ streaming platform represents a key component of this new approach. By offering a free, ad-supported service, the Ducks are ensuring that fans can easily access games across multiple devices, including smart TVs, tablets, and smartphones. The app will be available for download starting in September, further increasing accessibility for fans eager to catch every moment of the action.
“We are so pleased to announce that fans in our entire television market, via stream or traditional television (cable or over-the-air), will see locally broadcast games free of charge,” said Ducks president Aaron Teats. “It is a significant organizational priority to connect Ducks fans with our entire market and for every fan in our region to have the opportunity to watch Ducks games without cost across multiple, accessible platforms.”
Broadcasting Changes and Strategic Shifts
The Ducks' decision to transition away from Diamond Sports Group, their former broadcaster, marks a significant change. Diamond Sports Group, which is currently entangled in bankruptcy proceedings in Texas, saw its contract with the Ducks expire at the end of the 2023-24 season. This shift provides an opportunity for the Ducks to forge a new path and better serve their fan base.
The new broadcasting arrangement is being facilitated in partnership with A Parent Media, a company specializing in content coordination and media strategy. Jason Walsh, the chief operating officer for A Parent Media, noted, “The Ducks are already a significant content coordinator and have a team president with a broadcasting background.”
Local Coverage and Market Reach
The regional territory for the Ducks' broadcasts includes a wide range of counties—Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Imperial, Santa Barbara, and Ventura—as well as Hawaii. Fans in these areas will be able to watch the over-the-air broadcasts on Channel 13, ensuring comprehensive coverage throughout the region.
Maintaining a familiar and trusted broadcast team, Brian Hayward and John Ahlers will continue their roles, adding continuity and expertise to the new broadcasting format. Their enduring presence will help ensure a seamless transition for viewers accustomed to their commentary and insights.
Broader Trends in Sports Broadcasting
The Ducks are not alone in their pursuit of innovative broadcasting solutions. The Florida Panthers have shifted their local broadcasts to Scripps Sports, while the Dallas Stars plan to stream their games regionally on Victory+. These moves illustrate a broader trend within the NHL, as teams seek to leverage modern technology to reach and engage their fan bases effectively.
Despite the changes, Diamond Sports Group remains a significant player in sports broadcasting, carrying games for eight NHL teams during the 2024-25 season. The company also holds agreements with the Los Angeles Angels (MLB) and the LA Clippers (NBA), underscoring its continued influence in the market.
Overall, the Ducks' strategic shift reflects a keen awareness of the evolving landscape of sports media. By prioritizing accessibility and engagement, the team is positioning itself to better connect with fans and enhance the overall viewing experience. As the 2023-24 season approaches, Ducks fans can look forward to an exciting and innovative approach to following their favorite team.
