Jason Wright to Transition to Senior Adviser Role After 2024 Season
Jason Wright, the first Black president of an NFL team and the man who has navigated an era of immense change and challenge for the Washington Commanders, will transition from his current role following the 2024 season. Wright will take on a new role as a senior adviser with a primary focus on securing the completion of the Commanders' new stadium deal.
Wright began his tenure with the Commanders in 2020, a pivotal year when the team was still known as the Washington Football Team. Two years later, under his leadership, the team rebranded to the Washington Commanders. This change marked a significant milestone for the franchise, reflecting a new era in its identity and operations.
The organization faced a significant transition in ownership during Wright's tenure, shifting from Dan Snyder to Josh Harris. Wright's leadership was instrumental during this period, helping to stabilize and guide the team through the complexities that come with such a substantial change. "I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished over the past four years. Together with an amazing team of professionals, we have taken this franchise through a period of immense challenge and uncertainty and have transformed it," Wright stated.
Under Wright's stewardship, the Commanders witnessed a remarkable resurgence in fan engagement and community involvement. "We've set the table for an incredibly bright future under Josh's leadership. Over just the past year, we've welcomed record numbers of fans back into our building, made meaningful improvements to the fan experience, re-engaged with corporate partners, and reconnected with the community. Most importantly, we re-established a culture of respect in this organization," he emphasized.
Wright is not only celebrated for his administrative acumen but also for his unique background as only the fourth former player to assume the position of president of an NFL team. His multifaceted experience within the sport has given him a unique perspective and approach to leadership, highly valued within the franchise and beyond.
Looking to his future, Wright is a finalist for the position of president with the Green Bay Packers. This potential new chapter highlights his ambition and capability within NFL executive leadership, signaling his readiness to explore new horizons. "This feels like the right moment for me to explore my next leadership opportunity. I'm extremely grateful to my Commanders colleagues, our fans, and this community for all that we have accomplished these past four years, and am looking forward to the start of a very successful season for the Burgundy and Gold," Wright shared, reflecting on his decision to transition.
Despite the anticipated shift, Wright will remain with the Commanders throughout the entire 2024-2025 season, ensuring continuity and focus on pivotal projects, most notably the new stadium deal. "Given all those accomplishments, that's why I am proud to announce I will remain with the team throughout the 2024-2025 season, with the same responsibilities. In particular, I look forward to helping the organization complete its new stadium deal," Wright confirmed.
Jason Wright's tenure as president of the Washington Commanders will be remembered as a period of transformation, marked by resilience, strategic rebranding, and an unwavering commitment to the team's future. As he transitions to his new role and contemplates further opportunities, his legacy within the franchise and the broader NFL community will undoubtedly be profound and far-reaching.
