Comcast Resolves Blackout with Diamond Sports Group, Restores Bally Sports Channels for Xfinity Customers

Comcast subscribers finally breathed a sigh of relief as the telecommunications giant reached a new carriage deal with Diamond Sports Group, marking the end of a prolonged blackout of Bally Sports channels. This resolution, which had left numerous sports fans frustrated, ensures that Xfinity customers can tune back into their favorite local teams starting from the beginning of August.

Resolution After Months of Blackout

The blackout, which started in May, had Comcast customers in several key markets, including Atlanta, Minnesota, Detroit, Kansas City, Tampa Bay, and Miami, unable to access Bally Sports channels. The deal is particularly timely as Diamond Sports Group, which has been under Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings for the past 16 months, works to reorganize and stabilize its operations.

"Entering a new carriage agreement with Comcast, our third largest distributor, is a critical step forward in our restructuring effort, and we are pleased that fans will again be able to access broadcasts of their local teams through Xfinity," stated David Preschlack, CEO of Diamond Sports Group.

Opportunities for Sports Fans

The deal brings a welcome respite for fans who rely on Comcast's "Ultimate TV" package to watch live, local MLB, NBA, and NHL games. With this package, subscribers have the chance to catch teams such as the Marlins, Rays, Royals, and Tigers through Bally Sports’ streaming app. On the other hand, fans of the Braves and Twins will need to use the traditional broadcast channels for their game coverage.

In an enticing move, Xfinity customers have been given the window until August 30 to upgrade to the "Ultimate TV" package, which includes a free three-month trial. After the trial period, this comprehensive sports package will cost an additional $20 per month.

Diamond Sports’ Planning and Partnerships

The new agreement with Comcast is a crucial part of Diamond Sports Group’s broader strategy to navigate its financial difficulties and reorganize its operations. The company, which owns 15 regional sports networks under the Bally Sports banner, is also keen to finalize deals with the NHL and NBA as they seek to solidify their position in the sports broadcasting market.

"With certainty on our distribution, we are focused on finalizing an agreement with the NHL and resolving our ongoing negotiations with the NBA," Preschlack added. "We are mindful that time is of the essence with basketball and hockey seasons fast approaching, and once agreements with our team and league partners are complete, we intend to move expeditiously to present a plan of reorganization to the court."

Looking Ahead

After securing the rights to broadcast games for 12 Major League Baseball teams, Diamond Sports Group is now working diligently to ensure the continuity of their services with other major league sports. The company’s efforts are driven by a commitment to deliver uninterrupted sports coverage to their loyal viewers, despite the ongoing financial restructuring.

As the sports seasons transition into their peak periods, fans can rest assured that the Bally Sports channels will deliver the high-quality sports content they have come to expect. This development underscores the importance of strategic partnerships and swift actions in addressing broadcasting disruptions, ultimately benefiting the dedicated sports community.

For now, the renewed partnership between Comcast and Diamond Sports Group stands as a testament to the resilience and adaptability of sports networks in challenging times. With a renewed focus on their core mission, both organizations are poised to deliver an enhanced viewing experience for sports enthusiasts across the affected regions.
